“I started this journey in the mysterious art of the Harimau, Pencak Silat ten years ago, the path has not been easy. With the intense training, Indonesian philosophy and understanding of the harimau (tiger) ethics, (hormat adat), I am only now starting to understand my art. This came to light when I visited my teacher Maha Guru Richard Crabbe de-Bordes in Ghana, Africa. I departed London Heathrow on the 15th of October, 2003 and arrived at Accra International later that evening,” this was said by Pendekar Scott Mcquaid in a major Combat Magazine six years ago.
Over the years many Pencak Silat and non- Pencak Silat practitioners have gone in search of the Guru. Sometimes chasing him all the way to Africa, Ghana in particular. This search for the Guru in Ghana was pioneered by Dr. Lee Wilson of Cambridge University England, an adept practitioner of Pencak Silat and a student of Maha Guru Richard Crabbe de-Bordes some 11 years ago. Followed on a year or so later by Master Uanu Sheshmi of “From Boyhood to Manhood Organization,” London –England and Robin Lawrence, European Orthopaedic manager of Johnson & Johnson also of London-England. Then a visit by Guru Charles Gore of Canon Europa England and Mr. Carlton Gore his father.
Guru Charles Gore returned later to Ghana with Guru Patrick Graham of Wali Songo Pencak Silat and later on Guru Charles Gore visited with Mr. Chris Brown of Visions International, Cayman Islands. Then came Persilat Banayiotis Klitou, a property magnate, London- UK
By now all roads and air destinations led to Accra- Ghana. Then came Persilat Kelly Smith of ADT Inc. Texas-USA. Guru Besar Randolph Carthy followed numerous times.
August 2006 brought together African Martial Science practitioners from England and the USA. This delegation was led by Master Ahati Kilindi. Numerous masters and practitioners of Pencak Silat and other forms of Martial Arts have followed this trend till date.
The most recent visit was in March 2009 by Monica Grassi, Davide, and Andrea. This group of Italian Harimau Minangkabau Pencak Silat practitioners after visiting the Yorkshire Silat Academy headed by Guru Paul Deans for 3 years decided to finally make the pilgrimage to see and train with the “Senior Tiger” Maha Guru Richard Crabbe de-Bordes.
The 12 days no nonsense, soul searching, in your face intensive training was memorable and fulfilling. At the end of the Italians journey, Guru Paul Deans said, “They are very sincere, and the feedback that they have given from the visit to learn from you is exceptional. They have christened you the Lion King...that I feel is another well deserved title sir!”
Does this surprise Maha Guru Richard Crabbe de-Bordes? Being a Warrior Chief of the Ga Tribe of the Republic of Ghana whose stool name is “The Lion King”, this christening does not surprise him at all. |
